WHY THE 2019 INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT?
Evidence indicates that whether in private or public schooling, strong school leadership with a solid foundation rooted in Instructional Leadership has the greatest impact and will actively improve the quality of teaching and learning in our schools.
In South Africa, this approach is relatively new, but in a country in desperate need for viable solutions to transformation, Instructional Leadership provides Heads of Schools, Deputies and Heads of Department and lead teachers with a practical approach to growing, developing and supporting the instructional skills of their teams on a daily basis. Exceptional teachers are not born; they are intentionally developed.
To facilitate this change in your school and actively work to develop exceptional teaching staff we invite you to attend the Instructional Leadership Summit.

WORKSHOP 1
Mindset – Student Achievement
Speaker: Gavin Esterhuizen
How do we shift the conversation from what did we teach, to what did students learn? How can we responsibly and consistently collect data (student work, formative and summative data) that tells us what students have mastered? And perhaps most critically, what can we, as educators, do to move the needle in a positive direction on the data we do collect? This workshop will focus on practical systems we can develop in schools to collect, make sense of and respond to meaningful data in order to make informed instructional decisions for our classrooms and schools.

Instructional Strategies
Speakers: Dr. Paula Gordon & Samantha McMillan
The average teacher makes roughly 1500 decisions a day! How do we ensure that these decisions are high leverage? How do we maximize student learning? The most effective teacher can teach an exciting lesson, but how do we know students have mastered the content taught? This workshop will focus on strategies that you can use to actively engage your students in their learning and increase the rigour and joy in the classroom. It will be an interactive workshop. The goal is to walk away with tangible strategies that you can use in your classroom to maximize student learning. We will focus on instructional strategies as a lever to improve student achievement, build rigour and increase student engagement.

Teacher Observation
Speakers: Claudia Pienaar and Jeanine Kerr
Great teachers are not only born, they can also be cultivated. What is the role of the instructional leader, teacher coach in developing great teachers faster? The most critical contribution a leader or coach can make is in developing effective and good teachers, as quickly as possible--but how do we do that? What do we look for in classrooms when we are there? And how do we communicate the most effective actions to teachers so that they can grow? This workshop will focus on the skills of classroom observation as a lever for improving student achievement by improving teacher practice.

Feedback
Speaker: Theuns Opperman
We have seen the data, we have made our classroom observations--what now? Gathering information is only half of the journey of supporting teachers to be successful in their classrooms. The second half requires us as leaders to master meaningful check ins, grade level and department meetings. This session will focus on practical structures for individual and group meetings that can more effectively further execution is classrooms.
